Keeping your Puppy Healthy

Keeping your puppy healthy and using wisdom and knowledge to guide you in the day to day care of your puppy will prevent illness and cost when it comes the caring for your puppy.

Diet - Part 1 Protein

The most important thing you can do for your puppy is give him organic food. The base is the protein; we use a combination of any of the following organic: chicken, eggs, lamb, turkey, duck, different kinds of cheese, liver (if it is grass fed), mackerel and chicken livers. (We only us chicken as a raw food because the bones are soft and easy to chew.) All other meats are cooked and chopped up.

Milk is not a good idea but yogurt can be frozen with fruit in muffin tins for a cool summer treat. If the meats are cooked they must be de-boned.

Part 2 Carbohydrates and Vegetables from the vegetable patch
Dogs love raw fruits, vegetables, and meat (raw chicken is the only meat we feed raw because the bones are soft and easy to chew)
Cooked food recipe
Each portion should be: 2 cups cooked meat, 1 cup base (potatoes & veges) 1/3cup of fat.

About a third part of our recipe for dog food is what we call the base. It is made of cooked vegetable, which can be any combination of the following: squash, pumpkin, peas, carrots, spinach, beet tops, green beans, beets and potatoes etc. Cook vegetables until tender with as little water as possible. For a fat use any of the following: flax oil, olive oil, coconut oil, hemp oil or melted butter. When the rice is cool add the chopped up vegetables and the oil. I usually add 1/3 cup of oil for a three cup serving of the vegetable rice base. Now add about 3 cups of chopped up meat.

Keeping Puppy Clean and Ear Infections

Puppies and dogs can be bathed every week for maximum cleanliness and hypoallergenic effect. We know you love Wheatens because they do not shed and are hypoallergenic but did you know that your puppy needs a gentle shampoo, so that his or her skin does not get stripped of oils and react to harsh shampoos. For this reason we shampoo with TropiClean Hypoallergenic puppy formula 'non soap' formula made with Aloa vera, oatmeal, coconut and water.

Clean the puppies ears gently with a Q tip dipped in olive oil and if you think there may be some wetness blow dry on low to prevent moist from getting trapped.

If your puppies ears get red and show some signs of swelling apply a few drops of the following recipe twice a day: 4 ozs of Isopropyl alcohol, 1 tablespoon Boric acid powder and 4 drops Gentian Violet solution. If the infection persists pseudomas bacteria may be present so us a few drops twice a day of the following recipe: 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar mixed into 1 cup of warm water.

Deworming your puppy at home

We find that it is necessary to de-worm the puppies every two weeks. This is because they are puppies and eat or lick everything in sight. We use Fenbendazole liquid because it is gentle and not well absorbed from the intestinal track. We buy this online or you could buy is from Pharmasave at the pet counter. There is a Pharmasave in Cloverdale for all the people who live in the Fraser Valley. We recommend doing this yourself as it will cut down on vet expenses.

You can also use Revolution for heartworm prevention once a year and Advantage for fleas if you are so unlucky as to be in contact with these two pesky problems.
